Capt. Dave Hill
I like to say I've been fishing seriously since I was seven years old. But, my professional fishing career began in 1994. While managing The Valley Angler in Chagrin Falls, Ohio I also guided for Steelhead and Trout. After one year in northeastern Ohio, I decided to ditch retail and take up guiding full time. In January of 1996 I moved west settling in Missoula, Montana. I've been guiding the rivers of western Montana ever since.
I've since fished for Steelhead or Trout in fifteen different states and three different countries.
Ofcourse, guiding in Montana is seasonal. So, in the off season, I traveled south to the tropics fishing for everything both inshore and offshore and honing my skills and techniques not only fly fishing, but also bottom fishng, bait casting, surf casting, trolling, jigging, and even kite fishing. I've fished extensively in the Florida Keys, Baja Mexico, Costa Rica, Hawaii and New Zealand.
Over the years and throughout the world I've caught a variety of species including Blue Marlin, Striped Marlin, Pacific and Atlantic Sailfish, Shortbilled Spearfish, Wahoo, Dorado, Yellofin Tuna, Bigeye Tuna, Skipjack Tuna, Bonito, Yellowtail, Cubera Snapper, Mangrove Snapper, Red Snapper, Grouper, Roosterfish, Amberjack, Jack Crevalle, Horse-eyed Jack, Giant Trevally, Bluefin Trevally, Golden Trevally, Pompano, Snook, Sierra Mackeral, Ladyfish, Tarpon, and Bonefish to name a few.
Throughout my travels to the Salt, I came to love Bonefishing, as many fly fisherman do. I now spend my winters guiding clients to trophy sized Bonefish on the flats surrounding Oahu, Hawaii.
Fishing for Trophy Bonefish is a combination hunting, stalking, and fly fishing all while trying not to get "buck fever" and keeping your adrenaline in check. It's considered by many to be the ultimate in fly fishing pursuits - extremely challenging.
I also design flies for Umpqua Feather Merchants, where several of my trout patterns are currently available: Hill's Designated Hitter Skwala, Hill's Designated Hitter Golden Stone, and Hill's Designated Hitter Salmonfly
