The Bitterroot is up and off color. I was out yesterday and there was a good March Brown hatch with a few fish eating dries. There's only about two feet of visibility right now making for tough fishing conditions.
On a positive note, 'tis the season for Pike! I was able to catch several fish yesterday in some of my favorite back sloughs the largest being 6 1/2 lbs. On an exploratory fishing trip, several guide associates of mine where able to find some more productive water landing well over a dozen pike up to 10 lbs and moving twice that many.
We're finally seeing consistently warmer temps which is starting the snow melt in earnest. Look to the Missouri River to produce the best trout fishing for the next 4 or 5 weeks because most of western Montana's freestones are starting to get the Spring run-off. Still great opportunities for pike in the back sloughs off the larger rivers.
